Energy

Procurement

We work with you to ensure your energy contract is a perfect fit for your organisation. Aligning with your sustainability goals, growth plans, managed risk and budget.

Want to know about Sustainable Energy First’s approach to Energy Procurement?

Whether it’s a fixed or flexibly traded product or deep-green energy your organisation needs –
our Head of Risk, Matt Osborne, explains how we add value to your organisation.

27

million

In 2023 we managed the procurement of enough energy to power all 27 million homes in the UK for over 5 days.

Four ways we can help make your
energy supply more green

Renewable Energy Certificates

If you have or are looking for a green energy contract, to validate and prove the source of your energy supply, you will need certificates such as REGOs (Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin) or GoOs (Guarantees of Origin) to provide information to you on the source of their energy.

In the past couple of years, the price of these certificates has shot up, with several reasons why. One is the rising demand for green tariffs (from both businesses and households) and corporate power purchase agreements (CPPAs). Both require REGOs – and the law of supply and demand means that REGOs are getting more pricey.

The good news is, you don’t need to accept the price that you are given by your supplier. At Sustainable Energy First, we’ve been proactive in trying to manage this cost for our customers, and we can now supply REGOs from alternative sources – often at a lower price.

Sustainable Energy Consortium (SEC)

The Sustainable Energy Consortium (“SEC”) represents an innovative and unique proposition: matching renewable energy generators and environmentally conscious businesses, to supply deep green energy with significant commercial benefits.

For organisations, who want green traceable energy but for which a PPA just doesn’t work for them – our Sustainable Energy Consortium is the answer.

We have partnered with a broad set of renewable energy generators, and optimised the cost of the Consortium to provide both price security through a 5-year fixed contract, and via our unique contracting approach – a competitive price for deep-green energy.

By taking this product you will also be enabling generators bringing green energy online, support local community programmes.

More details on this unique product are below this section.

Power Purchase Agreements

A PPA or CPPA (Corporate Power Purchase Agreement) is an energy contract between an organisation and a generator of renewable power. By linking your energy supply to a specific green energy producer, you can identify where your power is generated and show that it is from renewable sources. This transparency can’t be rivalled by a contract with a standard energy supplier.

We recently announced the delivery of a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for our client, BNP Paribas.

On Site Generation or Private Wire

On-site energy generation involves producing power directly at the location where it’s needed. This approach often includes the utilisation of renewable sources such as solar, wind, or biomass, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional centralised energy production.

A Private Wire Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is a contractual arrangement between a power generator and a specific consumer or group of consumers. In this type of agreement, the power generator directly supplies electricity to the consumer through a dedicated physical connection known as a “private wire.”

What are the benefits?

  • (PRO) Performance Reward Opportunity
Offering both price protection and the potential to gain from energy market fluctuations.
  • Non-Commodity Relief
Non-Commodity costs reduced through the pioneering future of energy procurement.
  • Provides a direct source of traceable REGO backed green energy generation
  • Report lower figures for Scope 2 emissions and help the UK move towards its 2050 Net Zero target
  • Reap the benefits for your Scope 3 and include your supply chain – multiple companies can be added to the consortium to gain the benefits of a CPPA without the added complications or restrictions.
  • Security of supply – diversity of energy generation technology from a pool of assets, over a 5 year term.

Renewable energy with

CPPAs

Our renewable energy team is ideally placed to manage power and gas purchasing agreements (CPPAs / GPAs), whether they are fixed, flexible or corporate in nature. We’ll also manage your on-site renewable assets with generation profiles and projections.

Benefits of PPAs

  • Carbon zero – makes your business more sustainable by providing green energy directly from source, forming part of your ESG strategy and journey towards net zero
  • Additionality – results in new renewable capacity being brought online
  • Price protection – long term price security, protecting you from market volatility and allowing you to budget and plan for a sustainable future
  • Security of supply – a long term agreement (10 or 15 years) means you’ll be able to count on having green energy for the duration of your contract
  • Portability – it’s your contract to take with you if you move supplier
